The following guidelines are to be used when submitting to UnSung only.
Submissions for UnSung, Issue 1 are Currently Open
UnSung Magazine is accepting pieces that fall under the category of poetry, literary fiction, and creative non-fiction. We would also like to feature visual artists, and are accepting illustrations and photography. UnSung is choosing to focus on marginalized voices; priority will be given to artists and authors who are POC/immigrant/LGBTQ or any intersection of the aforementioned.
Submit it if it means something to you. It can be a poem about your grandmother’s garden, or a piece about your allegiance to prison abolition. Our seeking minority submissions doesn’t box you into only talking about your trauma and tribulations; we get that marginalized doesn’t equal monolith. That being said, we won’t shy away from hard topics. If you’d like to start important discourse with your work– go for it. Just be honest and authentic. We want to see you.
If submitting poetry, multiple pieces are allowed, but please no more than 5 at a time; if poems are each longer than 2 pages, submit no more than 3. Not all submitted may be accepted. For creative non-fiction and literary fiction, please limit submissions to 6000 words. Better Futures Press requires all authors to submit their work in standard manuscript format. For more information on standard formatting, please visit William Shunn’s guide.
We are a token paying market, offering $5 per piece of fiction / creative non-fiction between 1000-3000 words and $10 per piece between 3000-6000 words. We offer $5 per poem. All payable via Paypal. We are purchasing Non-Exclusive First World Rights to your work, meaning we are the first market in the world to feature your work, but you are allowed to submit it to a different market in the meantime, as long as Market B doesn’t want exclusivity. We do not accept reprints. We accept simultaneous submissions, but request that you don’t send reprints, and notify us if your pieces are accepted elsewhere.
Submissions should be emailed as a .doc attachment to the following address: firstname.lastname@example.org. Please put SUBMISSION: [Story Title] – [Full Name] – [Word Count] – [Publication] in the header to help us weed out spam. We invite you to add a cover letter detailing your publication history (if any, non-mandatory) and any relevant details. For instance, if your story is about a recovering addict and you’ve recovered from addiction, please mention that. These bios will appear before your story in the issue unless specifically requested not to, so make sure it is fit to print.
Example: SUBMISSION: [Story A] – [Jane DePerson] – – [UnSung Magazine]
Submissions are expected to be open until the early Fall. Depending on the project and its editor, response times may range between 2-8 weeks. If you haven’t heard anything in 9 weeks, please email email@example.com and put QUERY: [Story Title] – [Full Name] as the subject line and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
